Ask Yourself, “Why?”

It doesn't seem right that as a teenager you would choose to take your own life. After all, you have lived such a short life. Is it depression that you are dealing with and can't get through it? Or, is it other pressures in growing up – competition to get better grades or too much violence in the newspaper and on television?

Do you have difficulty dealing with everyday activities and responsibilities, trouble getting along with others, or have low self-esteem. Maybe you are dealing with depression. Signs of depression may include:

  • Feeling sad and it won't go away.
  • Trouble with a boyfriend/girlfriend or not getting along with friends or parents.
  • Boredom, can't concentrate, hopelessness.
  • Frequent crying or unexplained irritability.
  • Loss of interest in usual activities or hobbies.
  • Change in eating habit or sleeping habits.
  • Appearance has changed for the worse.
  • Drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Poor grades in school or missed classes.
  • Wanting to run away from home.
  • Shouting or complaining.
  • Reckless behavior.
  • Not feeling well even with treatment.
  • Thoughts about suicide.

If you are dealing with depression, you will most likely know it even before your parents suspect there is a problem. Yes, your problems are real and painful. Don't carry the burden yourself. If you think suicide is the answer, it is not. Do not remain silent. Talk to a friend or a trusted adult. Suicide is preventable and there is help!!
